HCMS Announces the Inaugural Eugene Braunwald, MD, Endowed Lecturer Selection: Professor Hugh Watkins HCMS is honored to announce Professor Hugh Watkins as the inaugural selection for its Eugene Braunwald, MD, Endowed Lecture. Professor Watkins, a Radcliffe Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and a Consultant in Cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, is a leading figure in cardiovascular research. Since 2008, he has directed the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence at Oxford. His pioneering research on the molecular genetic basis of cardiovascular disease has defined disease mechanisms and led to major advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and families with inherited cardiomyopathies, particularly HCM. His recent work has focused on understanding the polygenic contribution to cardiomyopathy and on developing genetic therapies to correct the underlying genetic disorder. A highly respected scientist, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2017 and is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Currently, he is the principal investigator for the international CureHeart program, which won the British Heart Foundation's Big Beat Challenge and aims to create genetic cures for cardiomyopathies.
